We live in extraordinary times, to borrow from both Carl Sagan and Anthony McCarten. To stand out our actions should be extraordinary as well.

FranklinCovey’s “The Speed of Trust” has “Show Loyalty” as one of its trust behaviors. They have a good definition, if you haven’t seen it before, check it out. Today, I’m going beyond “Show Loyalty” and proposing how we, as leaders, must go beyond the basics.

Almost all companies expect loyalty from their employees. Many companies do not in turn, show loyalty to the team. “I expect you to always want to work for my company. But, if things get bad, I’ll have to let you go — no hard feelings, it’s just business.” I’m not saying showing loyalty means never letting someone go. Your business will eventually fail if you don’t. What I am saying is show extraordinary loyalty to the person (not their role) before, during, and after their employment.

How do you show extraordinary loyalty at every phase of their employment relationship?

Pre-Employment

Have an open and transparent recruiting process. Be honest at every step of the way. Be communicative, don’t ghost a candidate. Even if you’ve made no decision, share it, so they know.

Layoffs continue in 2024, and people in many sectors are still struggling to find new opportunities…
